How to read this rating

The table lists every password manager we review, sorted by overall score. Use the filters to narrow it down by type, platform or feature — for example, only managers with a free plan, only those with a Linux app, or only open-source ones. The table updates instantly without reloading the page.

Each column answers a practical question:

What the scores mean

A score of 9 or above means a manager we can recommend to almost anyone. Scores in the high 8s mean a strong choice with some trade-offs, such as a limited free plan or missing platforms. Lower scores usually reflect a specific weakness — in LastPass’s case, the 2022 breach in which encrypted customer vaults were stolen. The weights behind every score are explained on our methodology page.

Picking from the rating

Start by filtering for the platforms you use, then decide whether you need a free plan. If several managers are left, open their reviews or a head-to-head comparison to see the differences that the table can’t show, such as how sharing works or what the family plan includes. If you have a specific situation in mind, our shortlists for free, family, business, mobile and browser use are a faster route.

Rating FAQ

Why is Bitwarden ranked first? It combines strong, independently audited security and open-source code with a free plan that has no device limit and low paid prices. 1Password is close behind and is the better choice if you value polish over price.

Why is LastPass ranked last? Its features are mature, but the 2022 breach, in which encrypted customer vaults and some unencrypted data were stolen, weighs heavily on a product whose job is to keep secrets safe.

Are these user ratings? No. Each score is our editorial rating based on the published criteria, not an average of customer reviews.

How often does the rating change? Scores are updated when a vendor changes its plans or prices, publishes a new audit, adds or removes a major feature, or discloses a security incident.
