Best Free Password Managers 2026
For anyone who wants real protection without a subscription. All three free plans below use the same encryption as their paid tiers; what differs is how many devices you can use at once and which extras are missing.
Bitwarden
9.4/10Unlimited passwords and devices, open-source, zero-knowledge — the free tier here has no meaningful catch. If you want one no-compromise free option, this is it.

8.9/10The free plan allows only one active device at a time, but the XChaCha20 encryption and clean interface make it a reasonable choice if you mostly use one device.

8.1/10The free plan is limited to one device type — mobile or computer, not both. Still usable, but the most restricted free tier here, and LastPass’s 2022 breach is worth reading about first.

A good free plan should cover the core job without weakening security: unlimited password storage, a password generator, autofill in your browser and the same end-to-end encryption as the paid tiers. What free plans usually leave out are extras such as encrypted file storage, emergency access, family sharing, breach monitoring and advanced two-step login options.
The real difference between free plans is device access. Most people need their passwords on a phone and a computer, so a plan that limits you to one device, or one type of device, quickly becomes awkward. That single question decides most of this list.
How the three free plans compare
Bitwarden Free is the only plan here with no device limit. You can install it on every phone, computer and browser you own, and sync between them. The code is open source and the company publishes independent audit reports. You lose the built-in 2FA code generator, encrypted attachments and emergency access, which come with Premium.
NordPass Free lets you install the app anywhere, but only one device can be logged in at a time. Switching from your laptop to your phone means signing out of one first. It works well if you mostly use a single device, and it is a convenient way to try NordPass before paying for Premium.
LastPass Free syncs across one device type only: either all your computers or all your mobile devices. In 2022 attackers stole encrypted copies of LastPass customer vaults, so if you choose it, use a long, unique master password and turn on multi-factor authentication from day one.
Is a free password manager safe?
Yes, as long as the provider is reputable. The encryption protecting your vault is the same on free and paid plans for every manager listed here. Security depends far more on your master password and two-factor authentication than on whether you pay. A free password manager is also far safer than reusing passwords or keeping them in a notes app.
When it is worth upgrading
- You share passwords with family. Family plans add shared vaults and separate private vaults for each member.
- You want help after a breach. Paid plans often include breach monitoring and password health reports.
- You need emergency access. Letting a trusted person reach your vault if something happens to you is usually a paid feature.
- You store documents. Encrypted file attachments are rarely included for free.
Getting started for free
Export the passwords saved in your browser, import them into the new manager, install the browser extension and mobile app, and then turn off the browser’s own password saving so new logins go to one place. Delete the export file when you are done — it contains your passwords in plain text. Then change your most important passwords, starting with your email account, because email can reset almost everything else.

FAQ
Are free password managers actually safe?+
Yes, for the ones on this list — the encryption is identical to the paid tier. You lose extra features, not security.
What's the catch with free plans?+
Usually a device limit or missing extras like 2FA hardware-key support or dark-web monitoring — not weaker encryption.
Should I ever pay for a password manager?+
If you need family sharing, business admin controls, or emergency access, the paid tiers add real value beyond the free plan.
